Monica Abbott Interview

Monica Abbott pitched in the USA Softball team that finished with a silver medal in the Bejing Olympics, losing only to Japan in the championship game. So it’s no coincidence that she now plays for the best team Japan.

What do you enjoy the most about playing in Japan?

The competition is insane, and definitely the support from the fans. They have a true passion for the sport as athletes and as fans, and it shines bright here.

There’s a great video of you on YouTube demonstrating how the use a bungee cord to improve your pitching. Are there other pieces of equipment that you incorporate in your softball training?

the Bungee cord is great because it allows sport specific resistance and allows you to mimic what you want your body too feel in the game!

What is your favorite explosive upper body exercise?

Split Jerk, Cleans.

What is your favorite explosive lower body exercise?

DeadLift, Cleans.

Is there an exercise used especially by softball pitchers that you believe could be beneficial for recreational athletes?

Anytime I can involve a twisting motion (open-close) or incorporate balance, I do! Try MedBall Twists, and Side Toss’s with a med ball.

Do you believe that there is a need to train your arms equally in sports that are one-side dominant?

Yes!! Absolutely, it’s important to be balanced and be able to use the opposite side of your body to stabilize. Plus…. it would look funny if you only trained one side.

Do you have any tips for people that want to train twice a day?

Don’t forget to manage your rest. Training twice a day is great, but get 100% out of both workouts!

What exercises would you do if you could only train one hour two times a week?

Session 1: Squats/Lunges and core

Session 2: Interval cardio w/sprints.

What is your view on periodization in training?

For a competitive athlete, it’s huge. We want to be at our best during specific times of the season so, creating a season for training based on athletic/sport needs is huge.

What is your favorite healthy food to pack for lunch?

my go to is PerfectFoods Bar Apple, Banana.

Is there a sport supplement that you recommend?

I like Advocare products, they have a variety depending on what you are trying to do.

What is your number one tool for fighting cravings?

Water!!! You literally can’t have enough.

What is in your opinion the most efficient way to recover from training?

Laying face up in the “X” position… no seriously. Getting a good stretch, a good meal and a good nights sleep can work miracles.

Can you tell us more about the Monica Abbott Classic?

The Monica Abbott Classic, is a 10u, 12u and 14u Softball Tournament. It is a fun interactive experience and helps raise funds for the Monica Abbott Scholarship, is also a canned food drive for shelters in the Monterey County Area.
